Vehicles in German Town Discovered Marked with Swastikas in Blood, Law Enforcement Confirm

Incident location Affected vehicle Area Police
Officers mentioned they were notified by a resident who found a vehicle in Hanau smeared with red-colored liquid

Roughly fifty automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.

Police state they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.

The fluid had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Police say early analysis indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"There is still no indication as to its source; officials are currently not aware of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.

Municipal representatives said they were working "to solve the incident" and have requested to the public for details.

A senior representative said the vandalism left him without words and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
