The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
