The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
