Senate Approves Measure to Release Jeffrey Epstein Records

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of case documents associated with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by the president and his GOP allies. Trump's team changed course after months of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by unanimous consent, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a individual voting process, speeding up the process. Earlier that day, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Presidential Signature

The measure next heads to Trump for his signature. Trump indicated on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.

Although the president has for an extended period rejected the uproar over the official management of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the measure over the past few days, and said he would approve it if it reaches his desk.

Response

Opposition lawmakers, along with victims and their supporters who were present in a viewing area, cheered after the bill was approved. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he feared the measure would reveal personal information of people, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
