A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
