RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
