EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
