The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
