A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
